Can you believe we are in back to school mode already?
Mine actually started today when I wrote this. My oldest is in 7th grade this year and I still tear up watching her catch the bus.
Over the years I have found tons of back to school hacks for an organized school year.
So today I wanted to share them with you.
Hopefully it makes the back to school transition a little easier.
With a little planning you can rock this school year with ease!
So let’s get into it…
15 Back To School Hacks For An Organized School Year
1 – Build A Lunch Making Station
First things first, lets talk back to school hacks that involve school lunches.
Most of the school year my children bring their own lunch.
I have found that having a small space in my kitchen, specifically designated for lunch making items to be super helpful.
For me this includes one shelf in my cabinet. That is where we keep all of our reusable containers, water bottles and small baggies.
When it is time for my kids to make their lunches we do not have to waste time looking for anything.
Everything is right there organized in one cabinet.
2 – Meal Plan Kids Lunches
How I organize school lunches for the entire week in just 15 minutes.
I like to take a moment each Sunday to look over the school lunch selection for that week.
I make a note of who is buying and what day on my command center.
From there I can see who I need to make lunches for that week.
My kids are at the age where they can make most of their lunches themselves, so they choose what they want.
I have them fill out the remaining days on my calendar of what they will pack for lunch.
It is simple to see what I need, what I have and who is bringing what each day.
3- Make Lunches The Night Before
This is a huge time saver!!
For years I have meal prepped my kids lunches the night before.
School mornings are so rushed as it is, save yourself the extra stress and make them the night before. That way you can grab and go in the morning.
4 – Create A Command Center
Creating a command center is one of my biggest back to school hacks!
With so much happening in families these days a command center is crucial.
Having everything in one place all written out makes everything easier.
If nothing else have a central calendar where you can list where everyone needs to be on what day.
You can check out this post Back To School Command Center Must Haves for everything you need.
5 – Create A Homework Station
How to organize for back to school homework.
Having a designated homework area for your child can help create productivity.
My children have their own desks in their room but a central location in your home works as well.
Do what works for your family.
Each year before school starts, I will take inventory of the items they need for that year and set each child up with a homework caddy.
I love these caddies from the Dollar Tree, they are affordable and fit almost everything they each need.
I stock each caddy with new pencils, markers, erasers etc. Anything they need to get their homework done.
6 – Create A Paper Work Filing System For Each Child
The amount of paper work that comes home each school year can be so overwhelming.
Times that by three kids in my house, it can quickly become a massive pile and easily forgotten about.
So how do I organize school paper work?
Before school starts create a filing system that works.
Since I have three kids in school, I like to use a simple magazine holder with three slots.
I place a file folder with their name on it so I can store any important paperwork I need to refer back to throughout the year.
Art work and memorabilia pieces do not get stored in here.
For that, I use a large envelope to store it. Label the envelope with the child name and grade and simply collect all of the keep items from that year.
7 – Practice Your Evening Routines
Most of the summer we keep a bedtime routine but as the school year approaches it becomes a little stricter.
Whatever your evening routine looks like, start enforcing it a couple of weeks before school starts. That way the first week of school is a breeze since it became a habit.
8 – Organize Your Car For Back To School
This is one of those back to school hacks I wish I started sooner.
Now, I often feel like I live in my car once school starts.
Between drop offs, pick ups and activities your car can take a beating.
Now is the time to give it a good cleaning out and start fresh.
Make sure you have a kit for supplies like bandaids, baby wipes and napkins.
I even include a small plastic container with school supplies. That way if we are on the go my other children can get their homework done.
Just do not add crayons – I found out the hard way they melt. That was not my best idea haha.
9 – Layout Clothing Each Night Before Bed
Picking out clothes the night before is good habit to get into for your kids or even yourself.
The battle of what to wear takes the morning scramble down to a minimum.
I am not a morning person so the less I have to think about the better.
If you ambitious you can pick out the entire weeks worth of clothes for each child as well.
10 – Create A Emergency Kit For Each Child’s Backpack
Each year I restock their little emergency kits as well.
Depending on the child I will include hand sanitizer, Chapstick and a travel tissue pack.
Back to schools hacks for pre-teen girl mom’s, this is a good time to include those feminine products just in case!
11 – Create An After School Routine
Creating routines are important for households to run smoothly. This includes an after school routine.
When is snack, homework or dinner.
Just a guideline for the whole family to use to make afternoons easy as possible.
Feel free to print my after school checklist printable!
12 – Create A Drop Zone For Backpacks
Find a spot in your home where the backpacks “live”.
This could be a bench in your entry, or hooks on the wall.
Make it a habit to keep backpacks there at all times.
No parent wants to hear “I can’t find my backpack” in the morning when your rushing out the door.
13 – Buy Extra School Supplies
At some point during the school year a folder breaks or pencils run out.
Stock up on a few extra items before school starts.
Then…hide them where only you know where they are. That way your kids can’t use up all of the crayons you’ve reserved for school. This has happened to me!
By buying extra school supplies for the year can save you time and money You won’t have to run to the store when your child needs something mid year.
14 – Label, Label and Label
Even if your child does not lose things label their items.
With large class sizes, backpacks or lunch boxes that are identical things tend to get lost in the shuffle.
Take the time to label their water bottles, backpacks and lunchboxes.
I can not say enough great things about Mabel’s Labels!
I’ve ran items through the dishwasher or washing machine and they do not budge!
15 – Create A Cheat Sheet
Make a cheat sheet of all the times you need to keep track of and place this somewhere you can view it easily.
Many years we have had kids in different schools and to keep track of it all I found having it all in one spot very easy on my mom brain.
I include school start times, end times, bus numbers, bus pick up and drop off times. Anything you need to reference add on one clear sheet of paper.
There you have it mom’s back to school hacks that will make this school year run a lot smoother!
