Education in America has changed over the years. Some changes have been beneficial while others have quite possibly made it worse. However, academic short comings (such as the decreased graduation rate) are not only reflections of the poor quality of educational institutions but also a reflection of negligence (or absence) of parental involvement in their child’s learning. The best learners are those who have good attitudes and the right mindset; these children tend to flourish even in the least promising academic environments.
How To Make Excellent Education Possible For Your Kids
Choosing The Right School
Traditionally, the first step in bettering a child’s education is choosing the right learning environment. There are some schools, like the Miniapple International Montessori School, that choose not to follow the standard lecture-style classroom model. Instead, these learning environments are centered on hands-on learning. School and home environments with the appropriate funding, ones that make children feel safe, are encouraged to help optimize learning. Parents are also encouraged to group the school environment with a home environment that encourages children to challenge their abilities.
Practice Self-Discipline and Kindness
More importantly perhaps are the attitudes and qualities children are encouraged to practice. The best learners are those who practice honesty, courage, kindness, and self-discipline. They are also generally more resilient, allowing them to think more flexibly and creatively. Perhaps the most important things can practice with their children is a love of life, as this allows one to feel more connected, and ultimately be more receptive, to his or her external environment.
Honesty teaches children to be more willing to acknowledge in what areas they need to improve. Practicing kindness allows children to be more patient with themselves by understanding that not all learning experiences are easy ones. Great learners practice good self-disciple (while not being too strict) to help them find focus, control impulses, and find the courage to overcome their fears of the unknown. Working to change the outlook is perhaps the harder part of the journey, but it can be well worth the work.
The modern world presents a lot of distractions for students and their parents, so it is easy to see how a child’s education can get neglected. However, education is an investment of time and money from the beginning, not just when a student reaches college age. Only one in four high school students are ready for college when they graduate. Now is the time to invest in education, so we don’t pay more for it tomorrow.
