While we love our children dearly, sometimes they have the innate ability to cause a range of issues when it comes to moving with kids. By the time you’re an adult, moving isn’t as nostalgic as it may be for your child—saying goodbye to their home and friends often results in tears and tantrums for kids, with good reason.
There are a number of helpful tips and tricks that can help relieve the tears usually associated with moving with kids, and creating a seamless transition for the whole family.
With over 70 years’ experience moving families around the corner and across the globe, Kent Removals & Storage has accumulated all manner of tips and tricks can help you save time and stress, allowing you and your family to start enjoying your new home as quickly as possible.
- Be Honest & Keep Them Involved
It is important to ensure that your children are aware of all the changes that are occurring. Being open and honest with them throughout the entire moving process will help to ease any fears or apprehension. One idea may be to take them to the new area they will be moving to, familiarizing them with their new suburb and surroundings.
Your kids will also love the idea of decorating a new room, so try to involve them in this process. Discuss color palettes, toy arrangement and any adornment ideas – then they will feel as if they have contributed to the new room they will be living in.
- Timing is Everything
A scheduled activity like dancing or sport can help to have a routine on moving day, (and also take your kids off your hands for a couple of hours). It can also help to match up moving day to a time you know your children will be occupied. While this may not always be possible, it can help you and your movers operate more efficiently—having a number of kids running around can be unsafe and result in numerous hazards.
- Don’t Under Estimate How Long Moving Will Take
When relocating with children, there is a general rule of thumb. Think of the time it used to take you to move house (before children), and then double it for each child you have.
Give yourself ample time, particularly when it comes to packing. If you need detailed packing tips, be sure to download our Packing Tips Checklist.
- Create a Box of Special Things
Before you move into your new home, it is a good idea to let each child pack a box of special things. This may include favorite’s toy or a security blanket – just something that reminds them of home, which they will want right away. It may be scary for them to see their possessions loaded into a big, unfamiliar moving truck, so having easy access to this box can help them feel at home faster.
- Accept Help
When the moving trucks arrive, there will be a number of distractions and hazards that can be overwhelming for both you and your children. So, if a neighbor, family member or friend offers to lighten your load – accept their help. Not only can this grant you extra time to tick things off your moving checklist, it also means you won’t have to worry about your kid’s safety around heavy boxes and moving objects.
- Be Flexible
There is no hard and fast rule book when it comes to relocating with kids. So during this process, it is important to remain tolerant and flexible, placing a few contingencies in place.
Giving your kids a number of tasks to perform throughout the moving process; will give them a sense of involvement and appreciation. Don’t be so hard on yourself if not everything goes to plan, as any time your children feel involved, it is a job well done. While this is a stressful period for you, your children are also going through a transition as well, so try to make moving with kids as fun as it can possibly be.
Relocating as a family can be an extremely exciting part of your life. However, it is so important to maximize your moving time, especially when there are children in the mix. These tips can assist you in creating a stress-free move, as well as helping you settle your family into your new home.
