Public service to your community isn’t just for public employees. There are many ways to give back to your community. Some of these jobs depend on the municipality and its public employee structure.
Be aware that many of these jobs can be found on the municipality’s regular website or at the local town’s administration building.
Most public employees are part of a state union in the USA. These types of jobs vary but here are just a few ways you can get involved either professionally or personally on your own time.
Five Easy Ways to Give Back to Your Community
There are non-union community jobs including committees that often need members to help organize programs in the town. Five of these include:
- Arts Commission
- Environmental Commission
- Annual festivals and events programs
- School board
- Museums and Historical Societies
Towns always need members for their arts or environmental commissions. The arts commission provides towns with varied programs related to the arts. The environmental commission monitors sensitive environmental issues locally. Annual festivals and events need lots of members to plan, organize and promote annual festivals and events celebrated in the community.
Positions on local school boards may be chosen by the elected governance or by separate local elections. Openings for school boards are usually publicly posted. This is one of the most worthwhile ways to give back to your community. The school board may also seek adjunct members who work between the school system, business community and general population of the community.
Museums and Historical Societies
Museums need lots of help collecting, labeling and organizing artifacts that help the museum curator to keep the museum interesting to the community. Historical societies are usually a part of the local museum organization. Members of historical societies play an important role in maintaining community history. They may be involved in collecting data on the oldest structures, bridges and other sites in the town. They may also interact with local colleges to provide local historical data.
There are numerous other ways to give back to your community. Volunteering for civic and charitable organizations is among the most popular. The most recognizable civic groups each focus on a specific aspect of volunteering. For example, the blind, handicapped and deaf comprise the most widely known civic organizations’ bases of their volunteerism. Many community volunteers dedicate their work to the poor, sick or elderly. Community hospitals also have a need for volunteers in their gift shops and for a variety of patient services. Choose to volunteer and give back to your community.
If you have a desire to get involved in the community or just a passion for service then following some of these vocational paths should be right for you. For example, in some towns, the public administrator is a paid position. If this is your passion then getting a master of public administration mpa should be on your radar. Consider your own capabilities and seek out your local public administrative building to see how you can get started on your career today!
