5 Tips to Keeping Your Family Well During Flu Season

Now that the holiday season is over, kids are back to school and life goes back to normal routine doesn’t mean flu season is over. Nothing can ruin the start of the year like being sick. However, you don’t have to let it beat you.

Here are five ways to keep your family well during flu season.

Good Hand-Washing Habits

The world is full of germy surfaces ranging from door handles to products on shelves, and we’re constantly touching them. You never know who touched them last or whether they were carrying the flu bug when they did. For this reason, it’s important to encourage good hand-washing habits in your family. Always wash hands with hot, soapy water after coming home from a public place, using the restroom and before eating out. You may also wish to consider carrying hand sanitizer or wipes with you at all times. This will help reduce your risk of exposure to the influenza virus.

Fresh Fruits and Veggies

If you want to give your family a flu-fighting immune boost, provide them with plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. These foods aren’t just nutritious and loaded with fiber. They also contain powerful antioxidants that can help to support a healthy immune system. For the best protection, choose brightly colored foods like berries, carrots, leafy greens, squash, bananas, mangoes, melons and beets. Produce with bold colors is often much higher in antioxidants than those with bland colors.

Healthy After School Snacks

Cut Back on Sugar

You might want to limit your family’s consumption of them. Studies have found sugar to be a potent immune suppressant. What’s more, this effect has been shown to last up to five hours after consumption. This is more than enough time to give the flu virus an opportunity to take hold. Healthier after school options are a great idea.

Make Cleanliness Top Priority

A clean home is a healthy home, but with today’s busy lives, few people have the time or energy to do a thorough enough job. Illness-causing germs and viruses can lurk on dirty clothes, in dust, on faucet handles and even in bathtubs and on toilet seats and other places you may have missed. If you want to give your home a deep-clean to keep your family healthy, consider making a call to a cleaning service like the Maid Brigade.

Make a Better Bedtime

According to statistical data, the average person only gets six hours of sleep each night. This doesn’t just leave you feeling tired and groggy the next day. It can also make you more vulnerable to illness. Sleep is essential to a healthy immune system, and when you’re sleep-deprived, you leave yourself wide open to the flu and other nasty bugs. Try getting your family to go to bed at a more reasonable hour, which scientists say should be before 10pm.

Influenza is more than just an unpleasant illness. For some people, it can also be dangerous. By taking these five steps to keep your family well, you can help keep your new year cheerful and bright.
