If you have an upcoming family vacation, you are probably very excited to hit the road. While leaving town can be an exciting trip for everyone in the family, coming back to find problems with the home can cause a lot of worry and money.
Six things you should do before leaving for your next family vacation, no matter how long & you will be gone for.
- Store Your Valuables
No one ever wants to think about the possibility of a break-in while they are away on vacation. However, it does happen. It is always a good idea to take your most valuable items to a storage unit where they will be safe while you are away from home. You can go back and get them when you return home or leave them there for safe keeping in the future. You can store valuable such as jewelry, antiques, rare coins, family heirlooms or bank books in a storage unit.
- Make Outdoor Arrangements
When you are away from home on your next family trip, you don’t want anyone to be able to tell your house is empty. This might invite burglars. Instead, call your newspaper delivery service to ask them to hold your papers until you return, and ask a trusted friend to pick up your mail. You don’t want to leave any signs that you aren’t home. While you are at it, arrange to have someone water your flowers as well.
- Arrange Care for the Pets
If your pets aren’t going along with you on the family vacation, you will either need to board them or have someone else look after them. If your pets aren’t used to being left alone during the day, you may want to ask a trusted friend or family member to keep them at their house, so they don’t get anxious, which could cause their behavior to change and a mess when you come back. Make sure you explain any special dietary restrictions or medical conditions to the caregiver.
- Check Your Policy Information
Another sad but true fact is that accidents can happen even when you are on vacation. Check your life and health insurance policies to make sure they are paid up and that you understand the policies. Take the policy numbers with you while you are on vacation in case of an emergency. If you bought travel insurance, take this information with you as well.
- Clean, Clean, Clean
It is always a good idea to clean the house thoroughly before you leave for your family vacation. You are usually too tired when you return to do it, and it is nice to return to a clean home. Make sure you clean out the refrigerator as well, so you don’t return home to foul odors and rotten food.
- Leave Information with a Trusted Person
It is also a good idea to leave important information with a trusted friend or family member in case of an emergency. Make sure you leave your flight arrangements, hotel arrangements and other plans in case you need to be contacted while you are away from home.
Proper planning is essential to any family vacation. These tips will set the stage for a smooth vacation and give you peace of mind while you are gone.
