Organization is very important in my home. I am a very type a personality. I make lists, keep things simple and like schedules. With a family of 5, I find my day runs smoother when things are organized and I’m not running all over frazzled looking for something. Staying organized can be hard with kids, especially the little ones. Last year I decided becoming better organized and sticking to it is key! Here are some tips I try to follow and they have worked for over a year.
Everything has a home – Everything in my house has a home. Big or small I make sure there is a spot for everything.
Reduce clutter – The less you have the less time it will take to clean. Start by looking around at your items. If you can part with it either donate it sell it.
Routines – The more you have a routine in place your home will run like clock work. I have a morning routine and a night routine both include a 10 minute pick up. After breakfast and right before I go to bed I move around from room to room with a basket. By placing the items a simple laundry basket I can easily put everything in its place after the rooms are picked up.
Clean as you go – Each time you leave a room grab something that doesn’t belong there. Making dinner? Take a few seconds to clean out the kids school paperwork or mail pile.
Central dumping spot – Choose a main spot in your home where everything goes when you get home. I use this for my kids, we have a bench in the entrance of our home. They put all backpacks, lunch boxes and odds and ends from school there. After they have their snack they start going through what they have brought home and put it where it belongs.
Centralized calendar – This one will vary an depend on the individual but the concept is the same. Keep all appointments, birthdays, kids activities whatever it is keep it all in one place. There are so many ways to do this either Google calendar, your phone or old fashioned pen and paper.
Find what works for you an start small. The more little changes you make could benefit you day to day in the long run.
