Spending money is unavoidable during the holiday season. Whether you need to purchase gifts for your family or want to host a special dinner for your friends on Christmas eve, your pocketbook will be significantly lighter come January 1st. You can curb the amount spent by following some simple tips to help you stay frugal during the shopping season.
Set a Budget
Most people overspend during the holiday season because they don’t set a strict budget and stick to it.
Before you head out to do some shopping, withdraw cash from the ATM machine and use that amount for your Christmas spending. Leave your credit cards at home so you won’t be tempted to use them. If you already know what you want to buy for your friends and family, add up the prices of those items and withdraw only enough cash to cover those purchases.
Replace Broken Items and Re-Gift Them
If you are especially tight on money this year, replacing broken parts is a great way to save some cash.
Some toys just never die. If you’re child still loves to play with his Power Wheels toy but hasn’t been able to because it’s broken, try purchasing a Power Wheels replacement charger online. The cost of a replacement charger is significantly less than purchasing a brand new Power Wheels item, and your child will be happier than ever.
Purchase Items Online
When you begin to shop for the holidays, purchase all your items online. Doing your shopping online alleviates any stress that comes with spending countless hours in the mall, and will save you money in fuel costs.
Online stores such as The Mending Shed offers substantially lower prices on quality items than mainstream department stores. If you buy items in bulk online and spend over a certain amount of money, you may get a deal on shipping.
Dollar Stores are Gold Mines
Dollar stores are great when you only have a minimal amount of cash on hand. If you plan on buying gifts for little children, head to your nearest dollar store and pick up some affordable toys. While each toy only costs a dollar, these stocking-stuffers will give your kids months of enjoyment from it. Before purchasing anything from your local dollar store, carefully inspect the items to make sure there are no visual defects. Visiting multiple dollar stores will give you the best results.
