Protecting Your Family: 5 Unseen Horrors Potentially In Your Home

 Protecting Your Family

Your home can contain some potentially dangerous threats. Unfortunately, many of these problems do not become apparent until someone’s health has been compromised. If you are vigilant, however, you can be alert to these lurking dangers before they turn into a crisis. Here are 5 invisible problems that you should make sure aren’t present in your home.

  • 1. Unsafe Wiring

If the wiring in your home is old or you are overloading the circuits with appliances, you could be risking an electrical fire. Some signs that there could be a problem with your wiring include lights dimming for no apparent reason, people getting shocks when touching appliances or fuses frequently blowing out. If you experience any of these problems, contact an electrician as soon as possible. Electrical fires are extremely dangerous.

  • 2. Radon

Radon is one of the deadliest unseen dangers that can exist in a home. Radon gas is a natural form of radiation that can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer. Radon cannot be seen or smelt, and it can exist in any type of home, new or old. You can test for radon by buying a kit or hiring someone to do it for you. If it is detected, you should call your state’s radon office for advice.

  • 3. Dust Mites

Dust mites are tiny creatures that consume skin cells. They can produce allergies in many people. Sinus conditions such as runny nose, cough, itchy or watery eyes and post nasal drip can be signs of a dust mite allergy. In some people they can set off asthma attacks as well. While keeping your home as clean as possible can help prevent dust mites, they can be very difficult to get rid of. If you suspect that you have them, you may want to look up Ventura pest control and get them removed professionally.

  • 4. Unlocked Windows or Doors

If any doors or windows in your home are unsecured, this makes it easy for burglars and other intruders to break in. Be sure to lock all doors, including back and screen doors, garage doors and sliding doors. Windows, too, should be locked, especially at night and when no one is home.

  • 5. Black Mold

You don’t want any type of mold in your home, but black mold can be particularly dangerous. This type of mold can cause a variety of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness and respiratory problems. In addition to this, it is harmful to the structure of your home. If you suspect black mold, you should either remove it very carefully (using gloves, eye protection and a respirator mask) or call a professional to have it done.

These are some of the deadliest hidden dangers that can exist in homes. If you are on the lookout for them, you can remove these threats before they cause serious problems.
