I am an avid coupon-user, which means that when I walk into Target, I have my shopping apps open on my phone, Target mobile coupons in my text messages, and printed coupons in my hand. We struggle sometimes to keep on budget in our house, so I also use online sweepstakes to supplement my household savings. Sweepstakes and blog giveaways are everywhere these days, and while it may seem like the bigger sweepstakes are impossible to win, I have won many smaller prizes that have actually helped me more! I can’t really use a trip for two to Brazil, but I can sure use $100, movie tickets, or music CD’s.
Did you know that Nabisco recently had a sweepstakes where the grand prize was $100,000, but there were also 3,750 Apple iPods awarded, along with 8,750 iTunes gift cards, and 12,500 bags of Oreos? I didn’t enter to get the grand prize, although that sure would have been nice, but I had a more realistic hope of winning one of the thousands of smaller prizes. A win is a win, after all.
Paying attention to the small prizes has garnered me a lot of high-value coupons, some of which were sent to me simply because I entered the sweepstakes. Shasta currently has a sweepstakes where the grand prize is a trip to a Galaxy game in Los Angeles, but there are also 500 coupons for soda being awarded! I also just entered a Powerade sweepstakes where 250 soccer balls are included in the non-grand prizes.
I find all of these sweepstakes through the websites and blogs that have lists of giveaways to enter. That way, I don’t waste time searching for them myself. These websites also often have lists of “linkys” that will direct you to many blogs which are hosting their own giveaways. This is where the small prize mindset really comes into play. Most blogs can’t afford to give away a huge grand prize, but they sometimes have the best small prizes! My first blog giveaway win was for an Etsy shop gift card, and I used it to buy a Mother’s Day gift. I have also won many books and DVD’s from blogs, which I have given as Christmas gifts. These prizes certainly help to keep our holiday budget down!
Don’t get me wrong. I would never turn down a grand prize! However, to keep my expectations realistic and to win things that are actually useful for my household, I find it well worth a few minutes a day to submit online entries for sweepstakes that have many smaller prizes.
