I spend countless hours each day finding deals and coupons but never really talked about the meaning of Couponing Away Debt and where it came from. For the next few weeks I will go over tips and experiences I have learned along the way trying to get out of debt.
During my late teen years into my early 20’s when I discovered credit I was like a kid in the candy store. I bought whatever I wanted and never thought about it. I drove my dream car, always kept a fresh manicure and pedicure, hair highlights, all the clothes I “needed”. I figured I had a good paying job not many bills, why not? I was WRONG! Fast forward a few years I met my now husband. Before we moved to Florida together we never really sat down and discussed debt which was a mistake we would pay for later down the road. His debts mostly came from student loans and credit cards he had racked up for school supplies. Not like mine. Once again at the time did not think anything of it. We lived like we had tons of money because we kept charging. We lived fine dont get me wrong the bills were paid but it was a false sense of spending.
Children Changed Everything
Once we got married we, well I 😉 discussed having children. I always knew I wanted to be a stay at home mom. Shortly after we were pregnant with our daughter. It was a rough pregnancy for me so the best thing was for me to stop working. We thought everything would be ok. If my husband worked overtime that would make up for my salary. It did, I got to live my dream! It was amazing. That was the moment that changed everything. We quickly realized after she was born we could not live the lifestyle we were used to. We stopped using credit (gulp!). If we didnt have cash we didnt buy it. After a few years an extra child and one on the way the minimum balances became more than we could handle! At this rate we knew we felt we would drown in debt forever.
After we found out we were expecting baby number 3 which was a very unexpected joy we knew we needed to do something. The first thing was to consolidate most of the credit to lower our interest and payments. That helped alot, we were able to save some money and still get out of debt faster.
